How to use this calculator

Allocate extra payments to the highest-rate debt, optionally rolling freed payments forward. Enter amounts in the units shown, select the applicable options, and click Calculate. Use Reset to restore the starting values.

Calculation formula

Accrue each loan’s interest separately and apply minimums followed by avalanche extra payments.

Assumptions and accuracy

Review timing, rates, fees and result notes when comparing scenarios. Future returns and rates are assumptions rather than guaranteed outcomes. Monetary display follows the currency’s precision; intermediate calculations retain additional digits.

Choose what to calculate

Debt payoff calculator

Model highest-interest-first debt repayment with extra monthly, annual or one-time payments. Choose whether freed payments roll forward; no new borrowing is assumed.

Pay minimums on every debt, then direct extra money to the smallest remaining balance. Compare with the highest-interest-first avalanche plan; neither strategy changes the entered APRs.

Understanding this calculation

Debt payoff plans pay each minimum first, then allocate extra money by your selected strategy. Avalanche prioritizes high APR; snowball prioritizes small remaining balances.

Reading your result

Months until debt-free
The number of modeled monthly payments needed to clear all listed debts.
Total interest
Interest accrued across all debts under the selected strategy and budget.
Total paid
Starting balances plus modeled interest; new borrowing and additional fees are excluded.

Compare two scenarios

  1. Compare Avalanche and Debt Snowball with exactly the same debts, extra payments and rollover choice.
  2. Then increase the extra monthly amount without changing the strategy to isolate the effect of payment size.

Check before comparing

  • APR values in the debt list are annual percentages; balances and minimum payments are dollar amounts.
  • Keeping the total payment fixed rolls freed payments into other debts; turning rollover off changes the budget.
  • Snowball does not guarantee the lowest interest bill.

Worked examples

Use extra payments on multiple zero-rate debts

Illustrative inputs are specified in the steps below; the example link loads the complete settings. Unmentioned settings use the linked defaults.

  1. Minimums total 100 and the extra payment is 100. With rollover and no interest, a total 200 monthly repays 1,200 in six months.

Total interest: 0 USD.

Try these inputs

Pay the smallest balance first with a debt snowball

Two debts: $100 at 0% APR with a $10 minimum, and $1,000 at 12% APR with a $100 minimum. Add $100 per month and roll freed payments forward.

  1. The first month adds $10 interest to the larger debt.
  2. Pay minimums of $10 and $100, then clear the remaining $90 of the small debt.
  3. The final $10 of extra money goes to the larger debt; balances are $0 and $900 after month one.
  4. Subsequent balances are $699, $495.99, $290.9499 and $83.859399; the last payment is $84.69799299.

First-month payment is $210 and the combined ending balance is $900.

Common questions

What does payment rollover mean?

When a debt is repaid, its freed payment can be redirected to remaining debts rather than reducing the overall repayment budget.

Can I add an annual bonus to debt payoff?

Use the annual or one-time extra-payment settings and verify their timing. Do not also count the same amount as recurring monthly extra.

What is the difference between debt snowball and debt avalanche?

Both pay the entered minimum on every debt first. Snowball applies extra money to the smallest remaining balance, while avalanche applies it to the highest APR. This implementation ranks balances after monthly interest and minimum payments. Choose the separate mode to calculate either plan; snowball is not guaranteed to minimize interest.

Scope and assumptions

The strategy is an entered cash-flow plan, not a negotiated debt settlement. Fees, variable rates and new borrowing are outside unentered assumptions.

Calculation methods and formulas

Debt Payoff Plan

Allocate extra payments to the highest-rate debt, optionally rolling freed payments forward.

Accrue each loan’s interest separately and apply minimums followed by avalanche extra payments.

Debt Snowball

Pay minimums on all debts, then direct extra money to the smallest remaining balance. Optionally roll freed payments forward.

Accrue monthly interest, pay minimums, then rank remaining balances from smallest to largest. Ties use the higher APR first.
