Understanding this calculation

Compare a rebate with standard financing against a promotional interest rate without that rebate. Look at total loan payments as well as the difference in monthly installments.

Worked examples

Compare a rebate when both financing rates are zero

Illustrative inputs are specified in the steps below; the example link loads the complete settings. Unmentioned settings use the linked defaults.

  1. The rebate reduces principal to 18,000. Dividing by 60 gives 300 per month versus 20,000 / 60 = 333.33 without the rebate; tax and other fees are zero.

Monthly payment with cash back: 300 USD.

Common questions

Is the biggest cash rebate always the better deal?

No. A sufficiently lower promotional rate can offset the rebate over the loan term.

Should both offers use the same term and down payment?

Use matching assumptions for a fair comparison unless the offers genuinely require different terms. Review taxes and financed fees too.

Scope and assumptions

The comparison assumes the entered offers are mutually exclusive and held for the full modeled loan. Early payoff and offer restrictions can change the decision.
